History

Discover our story

You should know that our area has been inhabited since Roman times, appreciated for the Bormio thermal baths and already frequented in prehistoric times.

In the Middle Ages, some of our routes, such as the one to the Fraele Towers and the Gavia Pass, were key hubs for trade with Northern Europe. In modern times, the Stelvio Pass and the slopes of Bormio and Santa Caterina have been the scene of memorable moments in cycling and alpine skiing history.

ROMAN PERIOD: Already frequented by hunters in prehistoric times, Bormio entered history in Roman times.

Culture

Culture, art and Alpine roots

In Bormio, culture is an integral part of the landscape: it intertwines with the village's architecture, is felt in its places of worship, and is told in museums and testimonies of a past that lives on in the present.

Walking through the streets of the historic center, you sense a living legacy of tradition, art, and architecture. The ancient churches preserve precious frescoes and wooden works, while the museums tell the story of the County and daily life in Alta Valtellina. The Bormio Civic Museum, housed in the 17th-century Palazzo de Simoni, is a journey through time through objects, documents, and period costumes. Furthermore, the village's characteristic "reparti" (districts)—true communities within the community—evidently demonstrate a strong sense of belonging and identity.
